Miss Lonelyhearts & the Day of the Locust
- Author: Nathanael West
- Publisher: New Directions Publishing Corporation
- ISBN: 0811202151
Two of my all-time favorites, worth another read.
I long wondered if the “Homer Simpson” in “The Day of the Locust” is the namesake of the more modern, well-known HS. Apparently not, as I heard recently in some documentary that Matt Groening named HIS Homer Simpson after his father (or something like that, I don’t exactly recall).
The two characters have very few similarities, so coincidence is likely. West’s Homer Simpson is a sad everyman filled with unfocused longing. Unlike the Groening HS, West’s HS takes everything very seriously and seems to worry terribly what others think of him.
The coincidence IS strange, though… what are the odds of two characters named Homer Simpson appearing in such different works?
Other fun fax: Donald Sutherland played Homer Simpson in the creepily cool 70’s film version of “Day..”, and the creepily cool Karen Black played Faye Greener.
