Dry : A Memoir
- Author: Augusten Burroughs
- Year: 2004
- Publisher: Picador
- ISBN: 0312423799
This book was loaned to me by my friend Fran. She insisted that I would enjoy it, and “not just because [I’m] gay….”
I did enjoy it, in a way. The story was eerily familiar in many of its particulars: a gay guy living in the East Village, working in the advertsing business, and self-destructing. He, like me, drank at both the Cedar Tavern and the Boiler Room, both of which he describes well. He also shares my utter ambivalence toward “twelve step” programs.
Maybe this is my internal homophobia showing, but I was very annoyed by the predictable homo humor: gratuitous TV and advertising references, and an excessive attention to the clothes people wear.
