This was a timely read, given the death of Yassir Arafat.
Reading this filled me with the same dejection and despair as the recent US political battles. I think it was Jonathan Swift who said “you can’t reason someone out of a place he didn’t reason himself into” (paraphrase). The self-righteous zeal of Zionism is depressingly similar to the Christian fundamentalism and moral hypocrisy that has taken hold in the USA…. and it feels futile to argue against either. Both worldviews are scarily free of doubt. And in both cases, to pose opposition is to commit a grave moral error: if you criticize Israel, you’re an anti-Semite; if you criticize Bush you are an unpatriotic, treasonous, atheistic faggot (I plead guilty on the last two counts).
Of course, the Christian fundamentalists are rabidly pro-Israel, for nonsensical Biblical reasons. It’s amusing to note that though the Christians and Zionists pat each other on the back, their religions are mutually exclusive. One group will sit on the right hand of God, the other will fry.
