Sorry for my absence of late, folks. Since my last missive I have been through the wringer (and pulled some undeserving souls through it with me).

I have emerged from this latest brush with death and madness with surprising grace, I’m pleased to say. The whole mess is slowly giving birth to some kind of epiphany, the specifics of which haven’t quite come into focus yet. I think it has something to do with my increasing resistance to human contact — the lack of which appears fatal, I have learned.

So to my alienated friends and family, I ask you to send this broken soul some love…. Despite appearances, I need and appreciate it :)

A study done at the University of New South Wales seems to confirm what I have long observed: that gloomy people have a more accurate assessment of their surroundings than their blissed-out counterparts.

An article posted at “physorg.com” describes the study, which tested the ability to recall a collection of ten items left on a store counter. Subjects were asked to remember the items right after leaving the store. Researchers alternated the test environment, switching between bright sunny days and cold and wet ones. They also played maudlin music in the shop on the “dark” days.

As the researchers predicted, the grumpier subjects scored significantly higher than the Pollyannas. It’s no surprise to me… as I’ve always said, if you’re not depressed, you’re not paying attention.   :)
